Taking the fight to the recently-launched Aston Martin Rapide S is the BMW M6 Gran Coupe, which has officially entered the Malaysian scene, joining the M6 Coupe in the local line-up.
Under that long bonnet lurks a direct-injected 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8. Equipped with Valvetronic and Double Vanos, the powerplant produces 560 hp between 5,000 and 6,000 rpm and 680 Nm of torque between 1,500 and 5,750 rpm.
Drive is sent to the back via a seven-speed M twin-clutch 'box with Drivelogic (offering launch control and Low Speed Assistance functions), allowing the 1.95-tonne vehicle to get from 0-100 km/h in a little over four seconds and onwards to a 305 km/h top speed.
In spite of all the grunt, BMW claims a respectable average fuel consumption of under 10 litres per 100 km on the EU cycle, and CO2 emissions of 232 grams per km.
In charge of dynamics are an electronically-controlled limited-slip diff and Dynamic Damper Control (which offers Comfort, Sport and Sport+ settings), while M carbon ceramic brakes with gold-painted callipers are shielded by 20-inch M five twin-spoke alloys, wrapped in 265/35 tyres up front and 295/30 out back.
The BMW M6 Gran Coupe comes with a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof that is recessed down the middle to improve airflow. Other notable exterior elements include its flared wheelarches, quad tailpipes, adaptive LED headlamps with Corona rings and CFRP rear diffuser. The doors can soft close, too.
Step inside and M-specific instrument dials peek at you through a three-spoke leather steering wheel with shift paddles, while the headlining above you is trimmed in leather and Alcantara. There are M front sports seats and Merino leather upholstery throughout, and the back seats fold to increase boot volume to 1,265 litres, up from 460 litres.
The iDrive system features customisable settings for the M-specific head-up display, and drivers can save and access their preferred set-up via two M Drive buttons located on the steering wheel.
The BMW M6 Gran Coupe is priced at a cool RM999,800, on-the-road without insurance, making it RM11k dearer than its two-door sister. We've actually already had a go in the hot four-door 6er - watch this space for our driving impressions.
