The next-generation 2016 Toyota Prius will debut next month, according to a report by Bloomberg Business, a full seven years after the current model was initially unveiled. Ryo Sakai, spokesperson for Toyota disclosed that it will be officially revealed to the masses on September 8, in Las Vegas.

It's high time for an update, as the Prius has gone without a major update throughout its life cycle. Sales of the hybrid vehicle in Japan has dropped by 31% in the first six months of 2015. Over in the US, cheaper fuel prices have not made things easier for the Prius - total sales of the fuel-efficient model decreased by 14% over the same period.

The new Prius hybrid will sit on Toyota's newest platform, the Toyota New Global Architecture (TGNA) that the company claims is able to provide a 15% improvement in fuel consumption through a revamped drive unit layout, smaller motors, inverters and batteries.
