Mercedes E-Class 2

The development of the W213 Mercedes-Benz E-Class seems to be gaining steam ahead of the car's expected unveiling in 2016, as our European spy photographers managed to capture the executive sedan sporting less disguise than before.

As expected, the W213 looks to ditch the current car's angular design in favour of styling similar to its W222 S-Class and W205 C-Class siblings, with long, drawn out proportions, gentle curves and an enormous radiator grille up in front.

We wonder if Mercedes is aping BMW's old "same sausage, different length" approach – as we've seen before, the interior also appears to mimic the S-Class, with four round centre air vents, full-width wood veneer trim and a large hooded binnacle incorporating the instrument cluster and an infotainment display in the centre.

Under the skin, the new E-Class is expected to be built on the W205 C-Class' rear-wheel drive Modular Rear Architecture (MRA) and feature a range of turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines up to 3.5 litres in displacement, as well as a plug-in hybrid variant. A fire-breathing E 63 AMG will sit at the top of the range, powered by AMG's new 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 as seen on the GT and C 63.
