On September 4, Mazda will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of its iconic front-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car, the Mazda MX-5, at the Mazda Roadster Thanks Day in Chiba, Japan. This will be a big day for fans across the world, and for a very good reason – it's when the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 will be revealed. The car will also be revealed simultaneously in Spain and the United States.
As previously reported, the new roadster will be the the first to be built with the company's SkyActiv technology, including the use of SkyActiv powertrains. It will feature "the most compact configuration yet" with a more centrally-positioned engine and a centre of gravity lower than ever before.
Mazda is aiming to shave more than 100 kg off the MX-5 with the new car, despite featuring "outstanding rigidity and crashworthiness." The backbone chassis, including the engine, drivetrain and suspension components, was shown at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) earlier this year.
As of May 31, Mazda has moved nearly 945,000 MX5s since 1989, clinching the Guinness World Record for the bestselling two-seater sports car of all time in the process.
