Blink and you'll miss it; this is the new 2014 Land Rover Discovery, now updated with revised looks and upgraded tech. New are the front grille, bumper, headlamps with distinctive LED DRLs and wheel choices, to go along with its improved efficiency and new interior features.
Out goes the number four in the name, the latest model known just as the Discovery. The name also replaces the oversized "Land Rover" branding on the bonnet. This is the first move to establish the Discovery line as a brand of its own, echoing the flagship Range Rover models. The next-gen Freelander is said to join the extended Discovery range.
Also new are the engine badgings, which have been deleted from the rear tailgate and are now mounted on the front doors. These name and badging updates will not affect certain markets, however, as the model identification will stay as is, in say, the USA where it's known as the LR4 (and the Freelander the LR2).
Under the hood is the same 256 PS, 600 Nm 3.0 litre turbodiesel V6 matched to an eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox. Thanks to a new stop-start system, however, CO2 emissions have been reduced from 230 to 213 g/km, and fuel consumption improves from 11.2 to 12.4 km per litre compared to the outgoing model.
A new addition is the option of JLR's 340 PS 3.0 litre supercharged V6 petrol engine first introduced in the F-Type sports car, replacing the old 5.0 litre naturally aspirated V8 motor.
The updated range of driver assistance for the 2014 Discovery includes Wade Sensing, Blind Spot Monitoring, Closing Vehicle Sensing, Reverse Traffic Detection and T-junction Cameras. Also available is a 17-speaker, 825 Watts Meridian Surround audio system, previously exclusive to the Range Rover models.
