Audi has become the first carmaker to offer 4G Long Term Evolution (4G LTE) internet in a production car, amidst the launch of the high-speed network in the UK by O2 and Vodafone. Available in the Audi S3 Sportback, the technology will reach all other A3 variants in the British line-up by November.
To use 4G LTE, MMI navigation plus with Audi connect is required (available as part of the Technology package) and a SIM card with a data flat rate simply needs to be inserted into a slot in the Audi S3 Sportback's glovebox.
The MMI navigation plus with Audi connect in the Audi S3 Sportback uses 4G LTE for services including navigation with Google Earth and Google Street View, Audi music stream web radio and online traffic information.
Facebook and Twitter gain a text-to-speech function and a status function with prepared text modules. There's also a fuel station locator which offers distance and pricing information, as well as a local parking availability and pricing function.
Unveiled in February, the Audi S3 Sportback's turbocharged EA888 2.0 litre motor pumps out 300 hp and 380 Nm of torque, pushing it to 100 km/h from a standstill in five seconds flat (with twin-clutch S tronic 'box). Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.
The engine is shared with the current Volkswagen Golf R, which has just been unveiled for the upcoming Frankfurt show.
