Britain's long-time love affair with the Ford Mondeo is not a secret one, with over 1.4 million units sold there to date, out of 4.5 million in Europe. The large family car (what they call the D segment) turns 20 this year, and Ford has released a short film documenting its history.

With Ray Winstone's distinctive Cockney drawl providing the narration, the six-minute video takes you on a journey from the Mondeo's 1993 inception following a five-year, 3 billion-pound development programme, to its 1994 Car of the Year accolade, through the coining of the "Mondeo Man" phrase by Tony Blair himself and also to a certain fictional British secret agent.

Now entering its fifth generation, the new Ford Mondeo will be powered by a range of engines including a 1.0 litre EcoBoost and a petrol-hybrid powertrain when it lands in the UK in late-2014. It will have segment-first adaptive full LED headlamps and debut Ford's rear inflatable seat belts.
