Mercedes-Benz is once again ahead in the cog count game, having just debuted the 9G-TRONIC transmission featuring 9 gear ratios. The 9G-TRONIC is currently only available in a single W212 facelift variant, the Mercedes-Benz E 350 BlueTEC.
The 9G-TRONIC transmission doesn't do anything to improve the E 350 BlueTEC's 3.0 litre turbodiesel propel the car to 100km/h - acceleration figures remain at 6.6 seconds. But the two extra ratios do improve the car's fuel efficiency - combined fuel consumption has dropped by 0.2 litres per 100km from 5.5 litres per 100km to 5.3 litres per 100km, and CO2 emissions have been reduced from 144g/km to 138g/km.
The new gearbox is only available on the rear wheel drive version of the E 350 BlueTEC - the 4MATIC version soldiers on with the 7G-Tronic for now.
