Citroen has taken the wraps off its World Touring Car Championship challenger for the 2014 season – Sebastien Loeb's ride will be the Citroen C-Elysee WTCC. The choice of the C-Elysee, a three-box sedan that the brand has been banking on to expand its reach globally, may be a surprising choice, but the company says it's all in line with using racing as an active means of supporting its commercial development.

The C-Elysee WTCC is powered by the same 1.6 litre direct injection turbocharged Citroen Racing engine as seen on the DS3 WRC, with 380 hp at 6,000 rpm and 400 Nm at 4,500 rpm for output figures. The mill is paired to a Sadev six-speed sequential transmission, replete with a mechanical self-locking differential.

The exterior has been puffed up with a host of mods - the front bumper has an integrated aero splitter, and widened front and rear wings lend the car's bodywork a decidedly racing feel. Things are capped at the back with a not-so-subtle rear wing, and the car sits on 18-inch wheels wrapped with Yokohama rubbers.

Having begun a programme of development tests, the C-Elysee WTCC is scheduled to make its first public appearance in Frankfurt in September.
